How To Use Top Down Bottom Up Roman Shades
Always in style, elegant Roman shades control light and privacy. They add a touch of architectural flair to your windows and add design points to any room in your home. But you shouldn’t rely on mass-produced shades pulled from those big box store shelves to achieve a build-in look.
At Jackie and Bill's Drapery & Interiors, we feature custom Roman shades from Hunter Douglas to create a seamless appearance at your windows. These window treatments have different control options including the clever Top-Down/Bottom-Up design to make light control a breeze.
Custom Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas
Hunter Douglas offers several different varieties of Roman shades that you can customize with the Top-Down/Bottom-Up style of control. With this style, you can push your shades from the bottom up or the top down to customize where you would like to focus the light and privacy in your space.
We recommend the Top-Down/Bottom-Up option for custom Roman shades for rooms where both natural light and privacy are priorities—examples include living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices.
Vignette® Roman Shades have a horizontal orientation and a sophisticated aesthetic, with smooth folds and no exposed rear cords. You can order them in sheer, light-filtering, and room-darkening fabric opacities, in two styles:
- Rolling Style: A 4” full fold or 6” flat fold and rolls up into the headrail.
- Stacking Style: A 4” full fold fabric that stacks beneath a low-profile headrail for shallow mounting depths.
These shades come in many colors, prints, and patterns. Choose additional room-darkening liners with Vignette® Duolite® Shades to combine a light-filtering front shade and a room-darkening back panel on a single roller.
With Alustra® Woven Textures® Roman Shades, you can enjoy the look and feel of refined natural weaves made from sustainably-sourced fibers. Choose from breathable cottons, light linens, nubby tweeds, and more to create light-loving Roman shades that add texture and color to your space. With Top Down Bottom Up operation, you can enjoy these shades in a variety of different orientations customized to how you want to view the space. Choose from sheer, semi-sheer, and semi-opaque styles.

The Benefits of Top-Down/Bottom-Up Roman Shades
Those four configurations make Top-Down/Bottom-Up Roman shades incredibly versatile:
- Adjust the shades to cover just the lower half of a window to let in soft, natural light from above while keeping the lower part of the room shielded. It creates a calming effect in spaces where a soft glow is desired, like reading nooks.
- Lower the top of the shade and leaving the bottom in place brings in plenty of light while still maintaining privacy.
- Top-Down/Bottom-Up Roman Shades help you control glare, making them a great option for spaces with screens, like media rooms.
- When the sun is strong in certain parts of the room, you can easily adjust the shades to keep it out without fully darkening the space.
